Amazon has officially launched a new division within its Amazon Web Services (AWS), dedicated to advancing agentic AI technology. According to Reuters, the move signals the company’s intention to lead the next wave of AI innovation, with AWS CEO Matt Garman noting that agentic AI could potentially become “the next multi-billion-dollar business for AWS.”
Leading the new division is Swami Sivasubramanian, a key AWS executive with over three years of experience in various senior AI roles. By March 2025, Swami’s LinkedIn profile will reflect his new title: VP of AWS Agentic AI.
What is Agentic AI?
Unlike traditional passive AI, which merely reacts to user commands, agentic AI actively pursues specific goals. It perceives its environment, makes decisions based on reasoning, and takes action accordingly—constantly adapting to changing circumstances.
This form of AI offers a massive leap forward in terms of automation and efficiency, enabling businesses to complete tasks with little to no oversight.
In an internal email, Garman shared his excitement about the potential of agentic AI to unlock new levels of innovation for customers. “We have the opportunity to help our customers innovate even faster and unlock more possibilities,” he wrote, firmly believing that AI agents will drive the next technological breakthrough.
On LinkedIn, Swami further elaborated on the company’s shift toward agentic AI, explaining that these systems represent “the next frontier in computing.” He emphasized that the foundation laid by AWS in compute, storage, databases, and AI would serve as the building blocks for the future of agentic technology.
Swami also detailed how agentic AI goes far beyond today’s chatbot systems. “Agentic AI will drive efficiencies in areas like complex workflow orchestration, problem-solving with human-like reasoning, and even code writing and debugging,” he explained. Additionally, it will enable businesses to automate intricate decision-making processes with unprecedented ease.
“I’m excited about leading a new organization focused on advancing the power of agents,” Swami concluded, looking forward to bringing innovative AI technologies to AWS customers.
Amazon’s pursuit of AI excellence is hardly new. The company has long been a leader in the AI space, particularly with its Alexa voice assistant, which continues to evolve with natural language processing (NLP) improvements.
In January 2025, Amazon introduced Alexa+, an upgraded version of its voice assistant powered by generative AI (Gen AI). According to Panos Panay, SVP of Devices & Services at Amazon, Alexa+ can “take action” and orchestrate complex tasks across thousands of services and devices—something previously unseen at such a scale.
With the addition of agentic capabilities, Alexa+ can now navigate the internet autonomously, completing tasks on behalf of users. This makes Alexa more personalized, capable of managing homes more effectively, and proactive in engaging with users to offer a better user experience.
The Rise of Agentic AI in the Tech Industry
Amazon’s foray into agentic AI comes as other tech giants also embrace this groundbreaking technology. Microsoft has been expanding its Copilot platform to integrate agentic functionalities, including AI-powered agents for sales. These new agents automate key aspects of the sales workflow, such as converting contacts into qualified leads, expanding sales pipelines, scheduling meetings, and even closing transactions without human intervention.
Jared Spataro, CMO of AI at Work at Microsoft, commented, “Our ambition is to empower every employee with a Copilot and transform every business process with agents.”
Similarly, Google has been pioneering the development of agentic AI through its Gemini AI models, which are designed for advanced reasoning and planning. In February 2025, Google released the latest version, Gemini 2.0, featuring enhanced performance and multimodal capabilities.
Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google and Alphabet, highlighted the company’s dedication to agentic AI in late 2024, stating: “We have been investing in developing more agentic models that understand the world around you, think multiple steps ahead, and take action on your behalf with your supervision.”
As Amazon and other major tech companies like Microsoft and Google continue to explore the potential of agentic AI, one thing is clear: AI is evolving from a tool that reacts to commands into a proactive, self-driven entity.
