Anthropic, the San Francisco-based AI startup often portrayed as an independent force in the AI race, appears to have closer ties to Google than previously understood. Recently obtained court documents, as reported by The New York Times, reveal that Google holds a 14% stake in Anthropic and is set to invest an additional $750 million into the company this year through a convertible debt agreement. This brings Google’s total investment in Anthropic to over $3 billion.

Despite its significant financial backing, Google does not hold voting rights, board seats, or direct control over Anthropic. However, as major AI startups continue to rely on funding from tech giants, regulators are paying closer attention to these partnerships. While some have raised concerns about whether such investments create an unfair competitive advantage, the Justice Department recently dropped a proposal that would have mandated divestitures of some of these tech giant stakes.

Google’s AI Strategy – Funding Rivals like Anthropic While Building Its Own Models

Google’s approach suggests a strategy of hedging its bets—developing its own AI models while simultaneously investing in competitors like Anthropic. This investment pattern is not unique to Google. Amazon, another major player in AI, has also committed to investing up to $8 billion in Anthropic, further blurring the lines between independent AI research and Big Tech influence.

As AI startups like Anthropic continue to secure funding from industry giants, questions persist about their independence. Are they still trailblazing innovators, or are they increasingly becoming subsidiaries of Big Tech’s AI ambitions? With mounting regulatory scrutiny and shifting industry dynamics, the evolving relationship between startups and tech giants will be a critical factor in shaping the future of artificial intelligence.
