Los Angeles-based startup Moonvalley has introduced Marey, an AI Video generating model designed to set a new industry standard by relying exclusively on openly licensed data. Unlike many competitors that train on copyrighted materials under fair-use claims, Moonvalley asserts that Marey was developed with legally acquired datasets, minimizing legal risks for users.

Named after film pioneer Étienne-Jules Marey, the model was built in collaboration with Asteria, an emerging AI animation studio. Moonvalley highlights Marey’s unique ability to provide fine-grained camera and motion controls, allowing users to dictate in-scene movements with precision.

The AI-generated video space is rapidly expanding, with companies such as Runway, Luma, OpenAI, and Google racing to release new models. However, as the market becomes saturated, differentiation is crucial. Moonvalley aims to stand out by prioritizing content ownership, legal compliance, and creative control.

Marey can generate high-definition (HD) video clips of up to 30 seconds, providing a balance between quality and usability. Its licensing approach mirrors Adobe’s strategy, which sources media from Adobe Stock to ensure legal compliance.

Addressing AI Video Generator Concerns in the Creative Industry

Generative AI has sparked concern among artists and creators, with fears that automation could disrupt traditional film and television jobs. A 2024 study by the Animation Guild predicts that over 100,000 U.S. film, TV, and animation roles could be affected by AI by 2026.

Moonvalley seeks to bridge this gap by offering content opt-out options for creators and ensuring users can delete their data at any time. Additionally, the company has introduced an indemnity policy, shielding users from potential copyright claims.

Unlike some unregulated video models that allow unauthorized depictions of real individuals, Marey integrates strict content moderation tools. Inspired by OpenAI’s Sora, Moonvalley’s system actively prevents:

  • The generation of videos featuring specific individuals or celebrities
  • NSFW content and inappropriate material
  • Unauthorized deepfake-style media

A New Standard for Ethical AI

Moonvalley’s co-founder and CEO, Naeem Talukdar, emphasizes the company’s commitment to ethical AI development.

“We’re proving it’s possible to train AI models without brazenly stealing creative work from the cinematographers, visual artists, and producers whose voices we aim to uplift with our technology,” Talukdar said in a statement.

With a focus on transparency, legal compliance, and creative empowerment, Moonvalley aims to redefine the future of AI-generated video while maintaining respect for intellectual property rights in the evolving digital landscape.
