Berlin-based automation startup n8n is riding the AI wave. Raising €55 million ($60 million) in fresh funding after seeing explosive growth from its AI-powered pivot. Sources close to the company say this new round values n8n at €250 million ($270 million). Marking a significant leap for the low-code platform that’s helping developers and enterprises simplify AI adoption.

Founded in 2019, n8n started as a low-code/no-code workflow automation tool, helping developers connect apps without heavy coding. But it was the company’s early bet on AI-driven automation that sparked its recent surge. After retooling its platform in 2022 to become AI-friendly, n8n reports its revenue has grown 5X. Doubling in just the last two months.

Now, the company serves more than 3,000 enterprise customers and boasts 200,000 active users. Including many in the U.S., where over half its user base is located. This latest Series B funding round, led by Highland Europe with participation from HV Capital, Sequoia, Felicis, and Harpoon, will fuel continued expansion — especially in the U.S. market.

While n8n hasn’t disclosed its revenue, it confirmed that its customer base spans free, paid, and subscription users. All tapping into its growing library of workflow templates and developer tools.

A key part of n8n’s early traction came from its embrace of “fair code”. A model inspired by open-source principles but designed to reward creators when their work is commercialized. Founder and CEO Jan Oberhauser is a strong advocate for fair code, running a dedicated platform supporting the model. That ethos helped n8n build a vibrant developer community, now reflected in its 70,000+ GitHub stars.

Yet, it was the rise of generative AI that truly transformed n8n’s trajectory. As competitors like Tines, Workato, and UiPath rushed to blend AI with automation, Oberhauser and his team moved fast to integrate large language models (LLMs) into their platform.

“The shift was clear a year and a half ago,” Oberhauser explained. “We realized AI wasn’t just a trend — it was the future of how developers would build workflows.” The result is a system where users no longer need to write dozens of lines of code. Instead, they simply type natural language prompts like “Get data from X and send to Y”, and n8n generates the workflow.

The platform was designed to be LLM-agnostic, meaning customers can plug in their preferred models. That flexibility, combined with community-built templates and active forums, has fueled n8n’s growth and adoption.

Even so, the journey wasn’t instant. Oberhauser admits the AI tools struggled to gain traction early on. “It took a while for the market to catch up,” he said. But a year later, a perfect storm of AI hype and practical need flipped the script. Startups like Poolside, Codeium, and Magic were raising large rounds focused on AI coding, while companies scrambled to find real-world AI use cases.

Today, around 75% of n8n’s customers actively use its AI features, a number that reflects the growing demand for automation tools that are powerful yet simple to use.

“Everyone wants to leverage AI but struggles with implementation,” said David Blyghton, general partner at Highland Europe, which led the round. “n8n’s design and scale make it easy for teams to adopt — that’s why it stands out.”

With new funding in hand, n8n is doubling down on AI innovation, planning deeper U.S. expansion, and continuing to build tools that make AI-powered automation accessible for developers and businesses alike.
