Wikipedia is embracing generative AI—but not to write articles. Instead, the Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit behind the world’s largest encyclopedia, is introducing AI tools to support its human editors and ease their growing workload.

In a move announced Wednesday, the Foundation revealed its plan to integrate AI into the editorial process. The goal? To boost efficiency, not to automate content creation. This step is part of a larger effort to ensure the site remains accurate, reliable, and well-maintained amid the explosive growth of online content.

AI to Support, Not Supplant, Human Editors

Chris Albon, Director of Machine Learning, and Leila Zia, Head of Research at Wikimedia, stressed that AI won’t replace human editors. In a joint statement, they emphasized a “human-centered approach” with clear values: supporting editor autonomy, prioritizing open-source AI, ensuring transparency, and addressing multilingual challenges.

The AI tools will handle routine, repetitive tasks—not creative writing or editorial judgment. This includes background research, translation help, and onboarding new editors, allowing volunteers to spend more time on quality control and collaboration rather than technical hurdles.

Until now, Wikipedia has quietly used AI in the background to detect vandalism, translate pages, and predict readability. But this new integration will offer direct AI support to editors for the first time.

The Foundation’s blog post explains the mission clearly: reduce technical barriers so that volunteers can focus on what matters—ensuring the accuracy and reliability of Wikipedia’s vast content library.

Volunteer Strain Meets AI Assistance

Wikipedia relies heavily on volunteer editors, many of whom are unpaid. They patrol pages, check facts, correct errors, and monitor content. But the growing amount of information online is stretching these volunteers thin.

To address this, Wikimedia has taken several steps in recent years—from improving editor tools to providing legal support against harassment campaigns. Still, the scale of content growth poses a challenge.

And now, AI is accelerating the problem. The Foundation recently warned that AI bots are overwhelming Wikipedia. Automated systems are scraping Wikipedia content at scale, increasing server load and bandwidth usage by over 50%. This pressure affects site performance and risks undermining Wikipedia’s human-first mission.

In response, the Foundation announced a new initiative to create an open-access dataset of structured Wikipedia content. This dataset will offer machine-readable information specifically for AI training, helping reduce direct scraping of the public site meant for humans.

This approach helps balance the needs of AI developers with the need to preserve Wikipedia’s user experience. As more tech companies rely on open-source data to train models, Wikimedia’s structured dataset offers a cleaner, controlled solution.

The Foundation hopes that by building these AI tools in-house, with community input, it can avoid the pitfalls seen in other tech rollouts. Their emphasis on open-source systems, editor collaboration, and transparency shows a deep commitment to the values that have kept Wikipedia alive for over two decades.

In an age where content is created and consumed faster than ever, Wikipedia is choosing responsible AI adoption—a strategy that supports the editors behind the scenes while preserving the site’s human essence.
