Supabase, the open-source Firebase alternative, has closed a $200 million Series D funding round at a $2 billion post-money valuation. The round was led by Accel and included participation from Coatue, Y Combinator, Craft Ventures, and Felicis.
The funding comes just seven months after Supabase raised $80 million in a round led by Peak XV and Craft Ventures. That earlier round reportedly valued the company at about $900 million, according to PitchBook. This latest raise brings Supabase’s total funding to around $398 million.
Supabase A Backend Built for the AI Era
Supabase has rapidly become a preferred backend for developers building modern applications, especially those powered by AI. The platform offers a scalable open-source alternative to Google’s Firebase, combining PostgreSQL with tools for authentication, API generation, file storage, and vector support—a key feature for AI apps.
Supabase’s CEO, Paul Copplestone, founded the startup in 2020 in New Zealand. Since then, its popularity has soared, particularly among Y Combinator startups and independent developers. Felicis managing partner Aydin Senkut described the company’s growth as “insane,” pointing to a developer community that now exceeds 1.7 million and a GitHub repository with over 81,000 stars.
Supabase’s flexibility and enterprise capabilities have positioned it as a go-to infrastructure for developers who want to “build in a weekend and scale to millions.” The platform’s simplicity, affordability, and power are helping it rise alongside a new generation of AI-first applications.
The Future of Open Source Development
While legacy platforms like Oracle remain deeply embedded in large enterprises, Supabase is gaining traction as the backend of choice for the next wave of billion-user apps. Its open-source roots, developer-first approach, and rapid adoption signal a shift in how modern infrastructure is built and scaled.
Supabase’s momentum is also aligned with the rise of “vibe coding”—a developer movement focused on creativity, collaboration, and rapid prototyping powered by community tools and AI. As this trend grows, Supabase is expected to remain a foundational tool for developers building the future of software.
